LONDON, 15 August 2025 -- Mr. Baiyu Liu AMBCS FRSA MIoD, President of the King's College London Students' Union, today attended the annual Queen Charlotte’s Ball hosted by the London Season alongside young people from across the UK and America in order to raise money for the charity GamMed.
The Queen Charlotte’s Ball, founded in 1780 by King George III in honour of his consort Queen Charlotte, is one of London’s “most sought after ball[s] and the highlight of the London Season calendar”. Originally established as a debutante ball introducing young women into high society, it has since evolved into a modern event that celebrates cultural heritage while directing its influence towards charitable purposes. Today, under the stewardship of the London Season, the Ball combines tradition with philanthropy, bringing together young people from across the globe to raise funds for charitable causes that transform lives.
This year’s chosen cause is the Gambia Medical UK Partnership (GamMed), a small medical and educational charity working to alleviate poverty among children in The Gambia. GamMed provides vital healthcare services, vaccinations, and nutritional support, while also investing in education and training for local communities. Its work ensures that children not only survive, but are given the tools to thrive — breaking the cycle of poverty through health, learning, and opportunity.
“The Gambia lies on the coast of West Africa. It is the smallest country in mainland Africa and has a population of 2.4million. It ranks among the poorest countries in the world with a Gross National Income per capita of less than $1,500. Less than half of The Gambia's population has access to electricity, and over a third of the country's urban population lives in slums.
We send regular teams of healthcare professionals unpaid and in their own time. This includes Anaesthetists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Radiologists, Plastic Surgeons, Physiotherapists and representatives from the medical devices industry. Surgical cases are performed and teaching & training provided. We also source & ship medical equipment. Most of this is donated by UK hospitals.” - GamMed
As President of King’s College London Students’ Union, Mr. Liu’s attendance underlined the importance of student leadership engaging with charitable causes of global significance. The Ball highlighted the role of young leaders in championing initiatives that extend beyond national borders, reaffirming the value of international solidarity and community action.
Funds raised on the evening will contribute directly to GamMed’s mission of delivering vital medical assistance, vaccinations, and education to Gambian children, ensuring they are given the opportunity of healthcare that they would not otherwise have.
The Office of the President extends thanks to the organisers of the London Season, fellow attendees, and all supporters of GamMed for their generosity. The commitment shown at Queen Charlotte’s Ball reflects the belief that historic traditions can serve contemporary purposes—bridging culture with compassion, and celebration with meaningful impact.
