LONDON, 29 July 2025 -- As part of the festivities leading up to the inauguration of Mr. Baiyu Liu AMBCS FRSA MIoD as President of the King's College London Students' Union, he hosted world-leading online influencer, businessman, and innovator in the tailoring space Mr. Roshan Melwani, JP, Managing Director of the internationally renowned, Hong Kong-based Sam's Tailor, at the King's College London Strand Campus.
The preparations for this event included President-Elect Liu visiting Sam's Tailor on-site in Hong Kong, learning about Mr. Melwani's craft and the cultural significance of the multi-generational atelier in the bustling Tsim Sha Tsui district of Hong Kong. Visiting Mr. Melwani's family and understanding the deep-roots they have in Hong Kong, and in providing tailoring services for leading movie stars, world leaders, and monarchs, signified the deep global interconnectedness of both Hong Kong, but also the cultural diversity of the student community at King's College London, many of whom followed the social media posts featuring both Mr. Liu and Mr. Melwani, and attended the Fireside Chat.
President-Elect Liu and Mr. Melwani were joined on-stage by son Riaan Melwani, who has also appeared in past social media content from Sam's Tailor, promoting the atelier's suits and gaining a significant online following in his own right as well. Mr. Melwani has frequently featured his family in social media posts.
At the Fireside Chat, Mr. Melwani discussed his experiences as a business leader during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, which significantly impacted his operations, as well as his work ethic. He described his experiences becoming an internationally recognised figure while travelling.
President-Elect Baiyu Liu said:
"Roshan Melwani of Sam's tailor was not only charming but also hugely insightful. He gave our students advice from style to the secret of success. It was an absolute honour to spend the afternoon with the Melwani family."
Roshan Melwani, JP of Sam's Tailor said:
"Forever grateful to King's College London. I hope all my kids decide to apply to KCL and get in."
Pursuant to the incoming administration's agenda to make King's College London an Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions ("MICE") hub, Mr. Melwani addressed a crowd of students from both KCL and other universities at the Arthur and Paula Lucas Lecture Theatre on the Strand Campus, where visitors from up and down the United Kingdom came to visit.
President-Elect Liu sends his thanks to the Melwani family for joining him at KCL, and to colleagues Christopher Lim and Heesen Ponnusawmy, who coordinated, organised and facilitated Mr. Melwani's visit to King's College London, including administering social media accounts promoting the event and liaising with Sam's Tailor. Many thanks also go to Najeeb Bukhari and Jennifer Forward-Hayter for the photography.
